Carbon Footprint reduction & Net-Zero strategy
The chapter Carbon footprint & Net-Zero strategy introduces all objectives and efforts by KROHNE to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within our company and at every level of our supply chain (scope 1-3).
To get the full picture, read ourKROHNE Group Net Zero Emission Strategy. All our goals are in line with the Paris Agreement and the EU Green Deal.
Net Zero Objectives
These are our short-term, near-term and long-term objectives:
Short-term objectives (2025)*
Reduction of CO2 emissions generated from vehicle fleet and air travel from 8 tonne/M€ to 6 tonne/M€ in 2025
Reduction of CO2 emissions by reducing energy consumption and making a transition to Green Electricity from 14.1 tonne/M€ to 10 tonne/M€ in 2025
Increase green packaging from 10% to 80%
Near-term objectives (2030)*
Reduce scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 60%
Increase annual sourcing of renewable electricity to 90%
Reduce energy consumption in manufacturing processes by 20%
Reduce energy consumption of products (scope 3) by 30%
Long-term objectives*
Reduce scope 1 and 2 emissions 95% by 2040
Net-Zero Operations by 2045
*The reference year for calculating objectives is 2019. This year has been chosen due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our business activities in 2020 and 2021.
Net Zero Actions
This chapter highlights actions we are taking to reach our Net-Zero targets.
Eco-Design of products and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
The design of our products has a direct impact on the environment: Weight, pressure loss, product lifespan and component material are important features that affect emissions. As early as the product development stage, our R&D engineers implement our internal Eco-Design guidelines, which meet the essential requirements of the Eco-Design for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR).
For each newly developed product, we will provide an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) that provides reliable information about their environmental impact through quantified and multi-criteria environmental data obtained from Life Cycle Assessment calculation.
Infrastructure and Energy Management
We run our operations and logistics according to a number of sustainability objectives, e.g.:
Source locally whenever possible.
Select green suppliers (e.g.: ISO14001 or ISO 45001 certified)
Reduce energy consumption in operations through continuous evaluation of all energy consumers.
Switch to green electricity and increase the amount of self-generated green electricity, e.g. through large-scale solar panels on roofs.
Most of our production and engineering facilities are certified in accordance with the international ISO 50001 standard, which contains requirements for defining, managing and improving an organisation's energy consumption and energy efficiency.
Net Zero Implementation
The implementation of KROHNE Net-Zero Strategy within our organisation is a major project in its own right: we have formed cross-location and cross-country working groups on various topics, consisting of employees with very different professional backgrounds.
This diversity allows the working groups to reach employees on an equal footing and offer them activity-based support in implementing the changes we need to achieve our Net-Zero goals.
Net Zero Reporting
For a detailed reporting of our scope 1-3 emissions, please refer to ourKROHNE annual sustainability report.
