Safe, reliable and simple to handle process instrumentation
for Safety Instrumented Systems

According to the latest global developments in terms of local implementations of plant safety systems, a strong growing demand can be seen in both, hardware and organisational needs.

Only fully reliable process automation hardware combined with a comprehensive safety management system will meet the future requirements of the process plants.

As a world leading manufacturer of process instrumentation and measurement solutions, KROHNE has implemented all relevant points into a comprehensive portfolio of measurement equipment, meeting the latest international safety standards, and incorporating advanced safety features.

The implementation of SIL into process devices requires not only certain engineering and circuit design, but also deep knowledge of the specifics of the meter type. KROHNE has gained decades of experience with different measuring technologies and meter types in critical applications, and continuously implemented this know-how into meter designs. Our SIL devices have proven themselves in extensive testing and field use and provide the quality and operational reliability to minimise risk in safety-related applications.

  • All new field instrumentation devices are developed acc. to IEC 61058 in SIL 2/3 operation

  • The only Coriolis mass flowmeters on the market allowing wireless device monitoring even in safety-related applications

  • Online diagnostic functions with a Proof Test Coverage of >96 %

  • Partial proof testing to optimise maintenance efforts

OPTIMASS – A world’s leading series of Coriolis mass flowmeters

The OPTIMASS series has covered all bases of all relevant applications around the globe for years. KROHNE offers the entire range of superior performance and high accuracy mass flowmeters. From small to large. For 0.00015 to 4600 t/h flows. For cryogenic applications or high temperatures up to +400 °C/+752 °F. For standard or demanding applications such as highly corrosive media or multiphase flows with a wide range of gas fractions and complex flow conditions.

Focus on safety

Safety in remote parametrisation

A plant safety management concept not only requires secure software and hardware components, but also must cover all the commissioning and maintenance of the relevant process automation equipment. For this reason, the MFC 400 converter software provides the most secure and versatile authentication concept for all remote access, fully certified via TÜV Rheinland.

The MFC 400 allows safety-relevant data to be changed via HART® signals using an FSK modem, even from the control room. Thus the operator no longer has any need to go out into the field to change any safety-relevant configuration.

This requires that all access levels are fully password protected, no matter whether the configuration is carried out remotely via HART®, via the local display, or via the OPTICHECK service tools.

Enhanced online diagnostics

Developed acc. to IEC 61508/61511, the OPTIMASS Coriolis flowmeter series is designed to meet the highest safety as well as security standards. In order to achieve diagnostic coverage of >96 %, all OPTIMASS flowmeters have integrated continuous signal monitoring, redundant references and calibrations.

Redundant storage of all device configuration data allows the converter to be replaced at any time without the need for manual reconfiguration: This means higher safety and less effort for the end-user.

Partial proof test – Proof testing in the process

Proof testing of safety-related functions usually requires closing the line and demounting of the measurement and actuation equipment, at considerable cost and plant downtime. Partial proof tests can be carried out while the equipment is still built into the process and can be performed a lot easier than such a full test.

For this reason, a partial proof test procedure for the OPTIMASS series has been developed in conjunction with TÜV Rheinland.

Proof test coverage (PTC) of up to 82 % is thus provided without the need to remove the device. This ensures the safe operation of any safety-relevant function and helps to justify the lengthening of full proof test intervals.

Focus on simple handling

New simple local parameterisation concept

All parameters within the OPTIMASS Coriolis flowmeters follow an intelligent concept: only frequently used parameters appear on the first level of operation, allowing for clearly structured access to all relevant data.

Parameters seldomly used are only shown on an ‘expert‘ level. As a result, the operator needs less time for device parameterisation and configuration, at the same time accidental misadjustments are reduced to a minimum.

Parameterisation via the local display

The only Coriolis mass flowmeters on the market allowing wireless access to when in SIL mode

All OPTIMASS flowmeters with the MFC 400 converter are now available with secure Bluetooth® communication. OPTIMASS with sensors and electronics MFC 400 is therefore the first and only device on the market that allows wireless parameterisation and monitoring in safety-related applications.

Using the new OPTICHECK Flow Mobile app on mobile devices or FDT/DTM on laptops commissioning, parameterisation, verification, performance monitoring and application parameters can be managed on-site via a Bluetooth® connection (≺20 m/65.6 ft) – ideal for devices installed in inaccessible areas or EX Zone 1.

When in SIL mode, the meter allows reading of all parameters and running diagnostic functions, when in NON-SIL mode all OPTICHECK Flow Mobile functions are enabled.

Focus on reliability

Advanced Entrained Gas Management (EGM™)

Next to secure and safe operation of flow measurement equipment, the best availability and reliability are essential for smooth and efficient plant operation. In the past, Coriolis flow measurement of liquids with entrained gas was technically impossible and most meters stopped functioning when gas fractions in the medium exceeded 4-5 %.

Introduced in 2012, Entrained Gas Measurement (EGM™) for all OPTIMASS Coriolis mass flowmeters has overcome this challenge. The KROHNE OPTIMASS series is the only range of meters to offer a solution for all flow conditions at all gas volume fractions – from 0 to 100 % – as a standard feature (not a cost-added option).

New opportunities with EGM™ functionalityThe secret of 2-phase flow measurementMass or density – both are possible even with gas entrainment

EGM™ functionality has overcome many of the previously insoluble problems experienced with earlier versions of Coriolis meters. As well as easily coping with liquids mixed with gas, the OPTIMASS can cope with slurries also containing gases, and highly viscous fluids with plugs of gas entrainment.

EGM™ also helps to overcome problems of flow regimes where increased viscosity and the relative different velocity of the liquid and the gas affect the flow regime.

Without entrained gas, the desired regular oscillation of the tubes in the Coriolis mass flowmeter is undisturbed. Gas entrained in the liquid dampens this regular oscillation of the measuring tubes, and as the gas content increases, the oscillation can come to a complete stop.

To overcome this, KROHNE has developed powerful control algorithms. These algorithms allow the meter to maintain the oscillation and continue to operate even with complex flow regimes. Even during a complete transition from a pure liquid phase to a gas phase and back, i.e. from 0 to 100% gas content, the device won‘t stop the operation.

Coriolis flowmeters can measure the mass flow, volume flow and density of any fluid, whether it is aerated or not. Density measurement of single-phase fluids is common practice, but for traditional meters it becomes challenging when there is entrained gas.

In many applications where entrained gas is present, meters with EGM™ show excellent performance and repeatability for process control, batching, loading, offloading and transfer measurement.

Focus on better performance over the entire life cycle
